Hip replacement surgery, or hip arthroplasty, resolves hip pain caused by injury from fractures, conditions like avascular necrosis or severe arthritis by replacing damaged parts of the joint with prosthetic implants. The result is better stability, mobility and function and less pain.

Types of hip replacement surgery

Frankfort Regional specializes in total hip replacement. The procedure involves removing the damaged cartilage and bone and implanting the prosthetic joint. Surgeons replace the ball of the thigh bone and socket of the pelvis bone with prosthetic (or artificial) pieces made from metal, ceramic and/or plastic.

We offer traditional and direct anterior hip replacement techniques. The direct anterior (front) hip replacement is minimally invasive, meaning it requires smaller incisions.

Anterior hip replacement surgery

Anterior hip replacement surgery is performed using a specially designed surgical table, called a hana®table. The hana® table allows for hyperextension, adduction and external rotation of the hip to an extent not possible with conventional tables. While using the table, our orthopedic surgeons are able to replace the hip without detachment of the muscles or tendons from the hip or thigh bones.

With the anterior approach, a small, four- or five-inch incision is made near the upper thigh. The muscles are then pushed aside, giving the surgeon access to the hip socket to perform the replacement. No muscles at any time during the procedure are split or detached.

Benefits of anterior hip replacement surgery include:

  • Faster recovery
  • Less pain
  • Smaller incision
  • Less blood loss
  • Less scarring
